United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending April 5 saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Rail carloads, at 226,790, increased 8.5% annually, trailing the week ending March 29, at 235,865, and topping the week ending March 22, at 235,865, respectively.

AAR reported that seven of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: coal, up 11,641 carloads, to 58,314; nonmetallic minerals, up 2,212 carloads, to 31,753; and chemicals, up 1,518 carloads, to 33,423. Commodity groups posting annual declines included: petroleum and petroleum products, down 521 carloads, to 9,475; forest products, down 231 carloads, to 8,309; and miscellaneous carloads, down 129 carloads, to 8,489.

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 273,794 units, headed up 13.6% annually, trailing the week ending March 29, at 277,688 units, and topping the week ending March 22, at 271,310 units.

 

Through the first 14 weeks of 2025, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 3,002,325, are up 0.7% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 3,814,523, are up 8.7% annually.
