United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending January 24, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 218,784, increased 13.7% annually, trailing the weeks ending January 17 and January 10, at 224,783, and 232,803, respectively.
AAR reported that all of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: coal, up 6,656 carloads, to 58,954; nonmetallic minerals, up 6,626 carloads, to 25,783; and chemicals, up 4,987 carloads, to 33,773.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 266,924, saw a minimal annual gain, rising 0.5%, trailing the weeks ending January 17 and January 10, at 280,602, and 277,654, respectively.
Through the first three weeks of 2026, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 672,370, are up 11.2% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers, art 825,180, are up 1.2%.
