The United States began charging 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods on Aug. 22 after negotiations between the two countries failed to produce a trade agreement.
The tariffs cover products ranging from cement, electronics, and packaging materials to furniture, dairy products, and industrial equipment. They apply to roughly 5% of Canadian exports to the United States.
Canada now plans to introduce retaliatory tariffs on American products beginning Sept. 8, expanding the dispute to goods moving in both directions across the border.
“Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said.
