United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending June 20, saw annual gains, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 233,259, increased 1.6% annually, topping the weeks ending June 13 and June 6, at 230,959, and 228,076, respectively.
AAR reported that seven of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains: metallic ores and metals, up 2,294 carloads, to 24,579; grain, up 1,752 carloads, to 22,993; and nonmetallic minerals, up 1,333 carloads, to 32,793. Commodity groups posting annual declines were: coal, down 3,541 carloads, to 55,786; miscellaneous carloads, down 1,346 carloads, to 9,376; and motor vehicles and parts, down 195 carloads, to 16,074.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 288,739 units, posted a 12.1% annual increase, trailing the weeks ending June 13 and June 6, at 289,477, and 293,748, respectively.
Through first 24 weeks of 2026, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,449,203, are up 3.2% annually, and intermodal units, at 6,691,916, are up 3.0% annually.
